Spanish Colonial Doors—SketchUp™ drawings

Dimensional projects are modeled in SketchUp, allowing both client and designer to study the project in considerable detail. These two views are based on a single SketchUp file capable of yielding unlimited views, angles, and distances. Materials, finishes and colors can also be previewed in infinite variations.

The lower image shows the basic drawing with dimensions and notes. The upper image is a close up exported to PhotoShop and very lightly modified to enhance contrast and dimensionality.

The doors are built up from three layers of plywood. The center layers requires a single sheet. The rails and tiles of the inner and outer frames are also plywood strips connected with biscuit joints. Each well in the outer face is trimmed with basswood profiles pre decorated with an embossed pattern imparted with mechanical rollers (this detail is not shown in the drawings). The iron bosses at the center of each well are large tacks (very large at 1 1/2" in diameter). The metal pull rings come from Bangladesh where ship wreckers recycle metal from unseaworthy hulks.

Although not shown in this drawing, exposed plywood edges are hidden with 1/8" thick edge banding. Parts are prestained with special attention paid to masking glue surfaces so the bond strength is not compromised. As a final precaution a tinted glue is used so any squeezed out residue will blend with the rest of the project. Final finish is imparted with four coats of gloss urethane.
